The pattern of freight rates last year illustrated well the conditions that ship owners have been enduring for some time now, whereby flurries of demand will boost rates temporarily before the underlying fundamentals of an oversupplied market quickly drag them back down again. After rallying for a third time in late-October, cape and panamax rates across the board fell to multi-year lows in January, as tanking bunker fuel prices combined with a lack of both iron ore and coal cargoes to weigh heavily on the market.
