The vast reserves of Africa are barely explored, let alone exploited. Coal is known to exist in some form in Angola, the Malagasy Republic, Nigeria, Sudan, Kenya and Tanzania, but little detailed exploration has been done while workings have been small. The exception to this rule is southern Africa. There, South Africa has one of the largest coal mining industries in the world, while reserves are also worked in Zimbabwe and are beginning to be exploited in Botswana and Mozambique.
