Increasingly, cities are aiming to better integrate equity concerns into their sustainability agendas. While a growing body of research has documented the prevalence and types of social justice or equity-focused initiatives that are being enacted by urban planners, scarce attention has been paid to the process by which cities incorporate equity into sustainability Thus, missing from the literature is a discussion of how local governments can strategically approach the challenge of equity integration.The lack of guidance on how to move from equity in the abstract to equity in practice likely acts as a significant deterrent for many cities. This article begins to address this knowledge gap by reflecting on the recent attempts by the Cleveland Mayor sOffice of Sustainability to more fully incorporate equity into its sustainability agenda. These experiences offer several insights into the process of equity integration that other cities may find useful as they chart the future course of their own sustainability programs.
