Japan's video game industry churns out more than a trillion yen worth of video games annually. With few signs of business recovery in the air, video games seem to be the only industry in Japan unaffected by the current recession. For the past dozen years or so, video game machines have spread at a tremendous rate, with aggregate domestic shipments of principal game devices (PlayStation, Sega Saturn, Nintendo 64) reaching about 30 million units as of March this year. Since there are about 44 million households in Japan, this means that there is one video game device for every 1.5 households — not to mention an average 26.5 games for each household. No wonder video games are the hottest industry in Japan today.
