摘要

Some 16.7 million Japanese travel abroad annually. The number of Japanese living overseas is also increasing year by year. The number of those staying abroad for more than three months exceeded the 720,000 mark as of November 1995. By far the largestnumber of them — over 130,000 — were sojourning in the Asian region, an increase of 13.3 percent from the previous year. This month's special report features four Japanese who are playing active roles elsewhere in Asia. All four identify closely with the communities they have chosen to live in. Unlike those who are dispatched to Asia as chuzai-in or resident representatives of Japanese businesses, the four left Japan by their own choice and are prepared to have their bones buried abroad. Our report also explores the new relationship between Japan and other Asian countries as brought into sharp relief by these expatriates' daily lives and work.
