The discovery that some myxosporeans develop through an actinosporean stage has led to the suppression of the Class Actinosporea in favour of the Class Myxosporea. It has been further proposed that names of existing actinosporean genera be declared invalid, existing species be considered species inquirendae and that a new system for referring to newly discovered actinosporeans be adopted. This has already led to inconsistencies. Here we argue for the retention of the Linnean system for actinosporeans and recommend that synonymies are made according to the existing International Code of Zoological Nomenclature.
