The proposed workplace parking levy in Nottingham would boost the local economy, contrary to claims from the city's business lobby, according to Jane Urquhart, Nottingham council's portfolio holder for transport and area working. She said that the levy would fund the city's tram extension and station improvements. The levy, due to begin in 2010, will apply to any employer with more than 10 workplace parking spaces. Each parking bay would be levied at ￡185 a year, rising to ￡350 in 2014. Nottingham City Council is awaiting approval for the scheme from the government.
