The introduction of massive amounts of carbon to the atmosphere-ocean system during the Paleocene-Eocene thermal maximum (PETM) at 55 Ma is associated with transient (~120-200 kyr duration) global warming and a host of other environmental changes. Recent investigations have focused on the response of the surface ocean and its role in the removal of excess carbon [Bains et al., 2000; Bralower, 2002; Kelly, 2002; Stoll and Bains, 2003]. The event had well-documented effects on plankton including a turnover in open ocean nannoplankton communities [e.g., Aubry, 1998; Bralower, 2002], blooms of dinoflagellates in shelf environments [Crouch et al, 2001], and the rapid appearance of new species or ecophenotypes of planktic foraminifera [e.g., Kelly et al., 1996]. Moreover, increased phytoplankton productivity has been proposed to play a role in the recovery of the atmosphere and ocean via drawdown of CO2 [e.g., Bains et al, 2000].
