During the next two months' of market pulp articles, Paper Tree Letter will use the opportunity to identify some economic or financial parameters that were common to cycles when pulp and paper demand, and price increases, were sustained for at least two years. The objective will be to establish any correlation between those parameters and the present cycle and to assess whether pulp and paper demand is capable of significant improvement so that prices can increase and be sustained through 2004, at least. The phrase, "what comes around, goes around", used to describe repetitive market cycles, immediately comes to mind. In our opinion, the two cycles that showed the strongest pulp bull-market tendencies were those that occurred in the periods of 1986-1989 and 1994-1995.
