A fundamental change is gaining traction in Europe's graphic paper markets and to a somewhat lesser extent in North America's: innovative papermakers have learned to use hardwood BCTMP (bleached chemi-thermomechanical pulp) and some other high yield pulps to provide paper specifiers with high quality paper at basis weights considerably lower than had previously been possible. Their objective is simple, to make paper that performs as well as traditional "woodfree" grades but that, because of its lighter weight, yields many more sheets of paper per tonne--the proverbial more with less.
