By 2012, the Government of India (Gol) aims to blend 20 per cent of all mineral diesel sold in the country with locally produced biodiesel, primarily obtained from plantations of Jatropha curcas. However, these plantations are yet to be established. This policy initiative can be traced back to 2003 when the Planning Commission Committee presented its final report on the development of biofuels to the prime minister. The scientists who recommended the cultivation of this indigenous species argued thatJatropha is a perennial and sturdy shrub that grows well on marginal land. It is drought and disease resistant and is not grazed by cattle. Its seeds contain —30 per cent1 oil y suitable for biodiesel production and it is estimated that, six years subsequent to initial sowing, each acre of plantation would have an annual yield of seeds sufficient to produce 1 ton of biodiesel.
