A MODULAR FURNITURE CONCEPT THAT CAN BE ADAPTED TO SUIT MULTIPLE TERMINAL FUNCTIONS IS HELPING AIRPORT OPERATORS MEET THE EXPECTATIONS OF MODERN TRAVELERS. In 1963 Paul Scharer Jr, an engineering graduate from ETH Zurich and the grandson of USM founder Ulrich Scharer, and Fritz Haller, an architect from Solothurn in Switzerland, developed the USM Haller modular furniture system. The system was based on an aesthetically pleasing and industrially flexible modular concept found at the newly constructed USM factory in Munsingen. The modular concept was initially developed for in-house requirements but was soon transferred from the macro to the micro scale. The start of mass production in 1969 took USM in a new direction and saw the company's success rapidly escalate to an international level.
