Deciding how far apart to plant pecan trees is the second most important decision any grower makes when starting or expanding a pecan orchard. The first decision of course is the selection of cultivars and poll-enizer cultivars to plant in the orchard. Tree spacing is rightfully a decision worth considering carefully, because it has both short-term and long-term effects on the profitability of the orchard. Mistakes with spacing have caused many orchards to never show a profit — ever. Pecan trees inthe Southeast have been planted on every possible tree and row spacing imaginable, and while there are tree spacing distances that are more popular than others, no "best" tree spacing exists for all orchards. What factors should be considered in determining a tree spacing that will result in profitability?
