My ever-growing list of insects that feed on pecan is now around 185 or so species and will continue to increase. We are fortunate that of the group, only a handful are considered primary pests. I must admit that over the years I have learned "never to say never" concerning minor insects and whether or not they could ever be a problem. Until last week I had never considered pecan catocala to be anything more than a solitary feeding caterpillar that generated anything more than curiosity and amazement. Mature larvae of some species will reach lengths of three inches and can create some unexpected excitement when grabbed accidentally. However, last week I did observe an area between Gonzales and Seguin, Texas, where this insect caused some significant defoliation and insecticides had to be applied.
