When the AAPD Clinical Practice Guidelines were first developed there was great concern they would become "standards of care." Well, that is exactly what they have become, and let me tell you why that is a very good thing. New models are developing associated with the delivery of oral health care to the children of this country. Dental care for children, especially children from low-income families, is increasingly being delivered by general dentists. This is occurring as large companies are opening dental clinics in underserved areas and hiring general dentists, often just out of dental school, to work in them. The vast majority of patients seen in these clinics, many of which serve primarily low-income families funded by Medicaid, are children who are young and have extensive dental disease.
