Common mental health problems (CMHPs) are widespread and are the health problem of working age affecting about one adult in six with conditions such as depression, anxiety or problems related to stress.1 Factoring in drug or alcohol dependence increases the prevalence to more than one in five.2 However employers consistently underestimate the magnitude of this issue. More than two thirds think that between none and one in twenty of their employees will ever have CMHPs.
