OFFERS OF territory under the Awards in Pre-defined Areas (APA) 2007 round, sent out in February - and all accepted - are set to bring a considerable number of smaller companies into the country's waters. The ministry of petroleum and energy offered 52 licences to 19 firms as operators - six of them only recently pre-qualified for that role - and licence interests (including operatorships) to a total of 37 companies. The ministry says there was extensive interest in the round, which offered 197 blocks and part-blocks and drew applications for 113. Annual APA rounds - launched in 2003 with the aim of promoting exploration around existing production infrastructure - have proved increasingly popular, with the number of companies seeking territory having risen from the 16 of APA 2003 to 46 in the latest round.
