A POTENTIALLY huge offshore gas find could help ward off an impending energy-supply crunch for Vietnam. But ExxonMobil's discovery lies in waters claimed by China, threatening to irk the country's increasingly powerful neighbour. Sources say ExxonMobil believes the find could be up to 5 trillion cubic feet (cf) - big enough to underpin a single liquefied natural gas (LNG) production train. But for Vietnam - one of Asia's fastest-developing countries - the focus is on domestic supply and, if confirmed, the find could ease fears of a looming gas-supply deficit.
