EXXONMOBIL is to invest $340m to extract an additional 40m barrels of crude oil from East Texas' Hawkins oilfield, extending the asset's producing life by another quarter-century. One of the largest oil discoveries ever made in the state, the 70-year-old field had yielded only 0.8bn of the estimated 1.8bn barrels of oil originally in place. But tertiary-recovery technology will increase output from a familiar formation at a cost of about $8.50 a barrel, says the company - a safer option, perhaps, than high spending on searching for new hydrocarbons in remote parts of the world.
