Given the oil and gas industry's reliance on resilient, service-aware networks to provide essential communications, new mission-critical applications are starting to become IP/Ethernet-based. These systems are more bandwidth intensive, providing richer information to the control centre. 'The key for mission critical applications in the oil and gas sector lies in a network technology based on multiprotocol label switching (MPLS) with its service oriented virtual private network (VPN) capability,' explains Xavier Saez, Business Development Manager for Oil, Gas and Mining, EMEA, at Nokia. 'Mission critical communications in digital oil and gas operations require 'carrier class' communications, both onshore and offshore.'
