In as far as there is a consensus, it is that world economic activity is picking up and prospects are looking better. Oil prices have certainly been rising quite quickly, having now breached $70/b. Excitable commentary from some of the financial houses suggest oil prices could go even higher in the fourth quarter. Chartists weigh in with their trends, resistance points and all the arcane analysis of their art. Price projections of $80 or even $90 flow from their charts. Meanwhile, gas prices languish with operators of new LNG capacity struggling to place their new flows (see p21). Politicians of all stripes and economists of all persuasions are busy spotting the 'green shoots' and even the 'green roots' of economic recovery, assuring us that the worst of the recession may be over despite the inexorable rise in unemployment in most countries around the world.
