Antibacterial, antioxidant, ecdysteroid agonist/antagonist activities, and general toxicity of two major lignans, matairesinol and matairesinoside, of the seeds of Centaurea scabiosa have been assessed.Centaurea scabiosa L. (Compositae alt. Asteraceae), a woody perennial, known as "Greater Knapweed", is one of the ca. 500 species of the genus Centaurea, distributed all over Europe including Austria, Great Britain, France, Ireland, Italy, Poland and the territories of the former USSR (Clapham et al., 1952; Flora Celtica database, 2001; Flora Europaea database, 2001; GRIN database, 2002).
