The Canadian Light Source (CLS) is one of the largest scientific projects in Canadian history and one of the most advanced synchrotron facilities in the world. The CLS is a third generation source, with a compact lattice that pushes the limits of synchrotron design while being the most cost-effective to build and operate. The operating parameters of the CLS are similar to those of most of the synchrotrons that have recently come online or are under construction around the world. The critical energy of the electron beam is 2,9 GeV with a maximum designed current of 500 mA, although the facility routinely operates at 250 mA with a beam lifetime of 20 hours. Officially opened in 2004, the CLS has surpassed many of its target parameters for the fust years of operations and is building an international reputation as a state of the art facility with an excellent research program focusing on materials and molecular science, earth and environmental sciences and the life sciences.
