Naturally it is a great honour to receive the 2011 CAP Medal for Outstanding Achievement in Industrial and Applied Physics. It is wonderful to be recognized for my contributions to society through physics. It was also very much a surprise. When John deBruyn proposed to nominate me, I laughed and told him to save his efforts for more fruitful endeavours. But he persisted, and I have to say I am glad he did. His actions in this set a theme which I will carry through this response — namely one of generous people who seem to have guided me to a destination I was not even aware of!
