摘要

A two-year U.N. study warns that as many as 100 developing countries are ill-prepared to manage both good and evil products of modern biotechnology, leaving the world at risk from serious biosafety threats. Based on an assessment by the U.N. University Institute of Advanced Studies, the report says training and management deficiencies in most countries of Africa, Central Asia, Oceania and the Caribbean "are so pervasive and broad that there is no effective international system of biosafety at the moment." The document was released at last month's meeting of parties to the Cartagena Biosafety Protocol in Bonn, Germany (see PTCN May 26, Page 17).
