The FDA Science Board moved unanimously Oct. 31 to recommend FDA redo its risk assessment that found bisphenol A safe for food packaging for children. FDA said in a draft assessment released in August that BPA was safe for all food-contact uses. But when a subcommittee organized by the FDA Science Board reviewed the draft, it found the agency failed to account for all exposures to BPA, such as medical devices, in estimating exposure. In a report released Oct. 28, the subcommittee said the FDA was wrong to dismiss certain studies used in other safety assessments (see PTCN, Nov. 3, Page 1).
