EPA reported Dec. 8 that 3.86 billion pounds of toxic chemicals were released into the environment in 2008 - a decrease of 6% over 2007 emissions. The news comes in an agency analysis of its Toxics Release Inventory, a database containing information on releases of 650 chemicals from more than 21,000 facilities into air, land and water. Specifically, the agency notes a 14% decrease in releases to air, a mere 0.1% increase in releases to land, and a 3% increase in releases to surface water (due in part to a coal ash spill at a Tennessee Valley Authority facility, in Kingston, Term.).
