Asia: Pesticide Action Network (PAN) Asia and the Pacific released a report last month showing that 66% of pesticide active ingredients used on vegetables, cotton, paddy rice, and other crops in eight countries are highly hazardous according to PAN international classification criteria. The report, Communities in Peril: Asian Regional Report on Community Monitoring of Highly Hazardous Pesticide Use, included interviews on pesticide use with over 1,300 peasant farmers in Cambodia, Sri Lanka, China, Philippines, Vietnam, India, Indonesia, and Malaysia. The report recommends reducing and eliminating highly hazardous pesticides and ending government registration of pesticides that require the use of personal protective equipment "because of its inadequacy and cost, making proper use unfeasible," a related press release states.
