Hawaii Gov.Linda Lingle (R)signed a measure June 24 to phase out the use of polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE)flame retardants in Hawaii,going further than any other state has to date by including deca-BDE in the ban.The new law prohibits the manufacture,processing or distributing of the chemicals beginning Jan.1,2006.The ban applies to any product or flame-retarded part of a product that contains more than 0.1 % by mass of penta-BDE,octa-BDE or "any other chemical formulation that is part of these classifications."That language implicitly covers deca-BDE.It was added in the state's Senate as an amendment to the original version,which only named penta-and octa-BDEs.The bill passed unanimously in both houses of the Hawaii legislature this spring.
