Although EPA-conducted acute toxicity tests of dispersants used to clean up the Gulf of Mexico oil spill show the chemicals alone, and in combination with oil, appear to pose little hazard to two marine organisms, government officials and academics told Congress last week that more research is needed to understand their potential long-term effects on the ecosystem.
