There may well be no field trials of genetically modified crops in France this year, following the government's decision last month to ban the commercial cultivation of transgenic corn. This is despite an official statement of support for biotechnology research and the promise of an eightfold increase in government funding for 2008. Valerie Pecresse, minister for research and higher education, has attempted to reassure French scientis of the government's continued support.
