EPA has finalized a rule exempting methyl bromide production and import for critical uses for 2006,the agency said in a Feb.2 Federal Register notice (see PTCN July 4,2005,Page 7).The rule authorizes 8,081,753 kilograms (kg) of methyl bromide for approved critical uses during 2006,or 32 % of U.S.methyl bromide use in 1991,the baseline year for consumption levels set by the 1987 Montreal Ozone Protocol - an international treaty designed to reduce and phase out the use of ozone depleting chemicals.The 2006 allowance amounts to approximately 90% of the U.S.request from the Protocol's Secretariat for this year.
