The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization(UN FAO)announced yesterday that it has successfully tested an environmentally friendly insecticide called Green Muscle under large-scale field conditions for the first time.Green Muscle was designed for use against locusts using a natural fungus called Metharhizium anisopliae,a biopesticide that kills the crop-devouring insects in one to three weeks by infecting locust hoppers in such a way that they stop feeding and die in one to three weeks.The product was developed by The Biological Control of Grasshoppers and Locusts Programme(LUBILOSA)sponsored by the Ascot,U.K.-based firm CABI Bioscience.
