There could be serious food shortages in Europe if the European Parliament goes ahead with proposed amendments to the pesticide laws,the chemical industry claimed last week in a heated debate with rapporteur(draftswoman)German Green Member of the European Parliament(MEP)Hiltrud Breyer.Klaus Welsch,senior vice-president at BASF,argued that the parliament's amendments would mean 85% of current pesticides would be banned.He said wheat production would fall by 30%,potato production by 30%,and claimed"harvests are in danger"and"food safety is in danger."
