Brazilian soybean producers who pay upfront royalties for certified seeds from Monsanto are pressing the company for flexible"backend"royalty exemptions when they sell their crops.The amount of credit granted by Monsanto toward royalties owed on the soybean seeds varies from state to state,but farmers in Mato Grosso claim that their 74-kilogram royalty exemption per kilogram of certified seed purchased for the 2008-09 growing season punishes them if their yields are higher or lower than expected."We still need to iron out some points in the royalty collection system,"says Glauber Silveira,president of the state's soybean producers association.
