EPA last week released preliminary, facility-level data on releases and transfers of toxic chemicals in 2009, as reported under the Toxics Release Inventory (TRI) Program. According to EPA, it is the earliest data release ever in the program. Based on the number of TRI reports submitted for the 2008 reporting year, EPA estimates the preliminary dataset for 2009 represents more than 80% of data to be reported. The deadline for reporting information covering the previous year is July 1. EPA attributes the lack of a complete dataset at this point to delays in processing electronic and paper submissions as well as late and incomplete submissions.
