After a relatively smooth approval by the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee Oct.6,with only Sen.Barbara Boxer(D-Calif.)raising any objections,the full Senate approved the nomination of George Gray as EPA assistant administrator for research and development by voice vote Oct.7.But the ease of the approval did nothing to silence Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility(PEER),which,before the votes,accused the Bush administration of turning EPA into an"arm of corporate R&D."Gray,who is expected to be sworn in sometime in the next couple of weeks,headed up the Harvard Center for Risk Analysis,which environmental groups have long accused of being biased toward industry because much of its funding comes from corporate contributions.
