The European Union's Environment Council is scheduled to discuss June 5 the EU authorization system for genetically modified organisms, particularly the way risk is assessed and the role of member states in the process. The current EU Council presidency, headed by Slovenia, has bowed to pressure from the French, who take over at the EU helm on July 1, and included the exchange of views as a full agenda item rather than under "any other business." This means that ministers will be able to discuss the issues at length and can make recommendations and adopt conclusions, although the plan at the moment is simply for an exchange of views.
