Mossi & Ghisolfi (M&G) said it has started production at the "world's largest" polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plant,a 450,000-t/y facility in Ipojuca,Pernambuco,Brazil (PCN,22 Jan 07,p 1).David Swift,marketing manager at M&G,told PCN that he "can confirm that the plant has been producing PET resin for commercial sale since February."The new PET facility is intended to meet Brazilian PET demand by substituting imports of about 250,000 t/y.Brazil's national development bank (BNDES) recently said those imports have accounted for a negative trade balance of more than US300-million annually.About half of the PET plant's feedstock will come from a 750,000-t/y purified terephthalic acid (PTA) unit being built by M&G at the Pernambuco site and expected to come on stream in early 2008 (PCN,6 June 05,p 1).The remainder of the PTA capacity will be used to satisfy existing and future South American demand,with some possible exports.
