Washington—If all of the non-recycled plastics disposed of in U.S. landfills were converted to energy using currently available technologies, they could provide at least enough energy to fuel 6-million vehicles annually, according to a new study sponsored by the American Chemistry Council (ACC). The study, conducted by the Earth Engineering Center (EEC) of Columbia University, also estimated that if all non-recycled plastics discarded in the U.S. were diverted to modern waste-to-energy facilities, they could produce sufficient electricity to power 5.2 million households per year.
