Muscat-Octal Petrochemicals' new 300,000-t/y polyethylene terephthalate (PET) resin plant in Oman's Salalah Free Zone has allowed the country to substitute 90% of its PET imports since production was started earlier this year (PCN, 26 Jan 09, p 1). Octal Chairman Sheikh Saad Suhail Bahwan noted that sales, currently valued at $42-million a year, are expected to increase further as customers use up their PET inventories and switch to Octal. In addition to local customers, the company exports PET resins to more than 30 countries, with sales expected to reach $400-million.
