Clayton-Olin Corp. has disclosed plans to discontinue the use of mercury cell technology in its chlor alkali manufacturing process by the end of 2012.The company said it will convert 260,000 t/y of mercury cell capacity at Charleston, Tenn., to 200,000 t/y of membrane capacity capable of producing both caustic soda and potassium hydroxide. In addition to the "most modern" membrane technology, the Charleston plant will have lower operating costs and produce higher quality products.
