Twin-boundary characteristics of melt-textured YBa_2Cu_3O_(7-x)

The twin-boundary characteristics of melt-textured YBa2Cu3O7-x have been investigated by transmission electron microscopy. Stoichiometric YBa2Cu3O7-x, Y2BaCuO5 phase-doped YBa2Cu3O7-x and YBa2Cu3O7-x with Y2BaCuO5 and additional Pt doping were studied. Pt leads to a drastic decrease in the b / a ratio and orthorhombicity. Therefore it is proposed that Pt substitutes for the Cu atoms of the CuO chains. The thickness of the twin boundary layer is reduced with decreasing oxygen content and by Pt doping. Two different types of twin boundary are observed which di er in their interfacial energy and structure. The twin spacing is reduced with the size of the twin domains. The domain size is strongly controlled by the density of Y2BaCuO5 inclusions which act as nucleation centres for the twin formation.
