Migration of ordered domain boundaries and its effect on the lamellar interfaces in Ti-Al-based alloys

Microstructural investigations have been carried out on a fully lamellar Ti_(49)Al_(47)Cr_2Nb_2 alloy in both the as-hot-isostatically-pressed and the annealed conditions by quantitative transmission electron microscopy studies. The proportions of twin and pseudotwin interfaces in the as-hot-isostatically-pressed condition and the relationships between the γ lamellae in the annealed condition were examined. These structural measurements demonstrate that the formation of the lamellar microstructure is not controlled only by the nucleation and growth of the orientation variants. The results are discussed in terms of the occurrence of a migration process of ordered domain boundaries. Finally, a mechanism for the formation of the lamellar microstructure is proposed.
