The decay rate of the 2s(2) 2p(2) S-1(0) level in N II has been measured optically (lambda = 575 nm) at a heavy-ion storage ring. The result of(1.10 +/- 0.27)s(-1) agrees with the theoretical predictions. The new data complement an earlier study of the same level decay in O III and F IV. Over this short range of ions, the role of the E2 and M1 decay modes changes dramatically.
