The distribution of molecular speeds for a hard spheres gas in the microcanonical ensemble follows the Schluter distribution when the number of molecules is small, converging to the classical Maxwell distribution in the large number limit. We present a derivation of the Schluter distribution, obtained from Khinchin's derivation of the factorization of the density of states, which is simpler and shorter than those currently available. We also verify its predictions for three-dimensional (3D) hard spheres using a desktop computer simulation, whereas previous studies have simulated only 2D hard discs.
