To accurately recover data encrypted in a chaotic carrier, the chaotic signals in the encoding and decoding systems must be suitably synchronized. In this paper secure communication based on similar but non-identical chaotic encoding and decoding systems is examined using the Lorenz and Lorenz-Stenflo (LS) equations for generating the chaotic signals. Since the two systems have different chaotic attractors, exact synchronization between them does not occur. However, it is shown that data encrypted in a Lorenz carrier can be accurately extracted by a LS decoder (and vice versa) if the rotation number in the LS equations is not too large. Detection of signals based on an LS chaotic electronic circuit is also investigated. [References: 11]
