The reactive rate coefficient for the formation of HD in collisions of D~+ ions with H_2 is investigated over the temperature range 10-400 K. It is assumed that the reaction proceeds via the formation of a long-lived complex that can decay into an energetically accessible reactive product with a high probability. A statistical mixing model is used to determine this probability taking into account all the constraints imposed by the conservation of angular momentum and nuclear symmetry and making allowance for the less probable non-reactive channels. For the temperature range studied, only a knowledge of the long-range interaction potential is required. The results, which are in excellent agreement with experiment, help to explain why the rate coefficient exhibits a decrease as the temperature increases.
