On cascade transitions between autoionizing doublet levels in sodium

The cascade transitions between autoionizing doublet levels in sodium atoms have been considered for elucidating the origin of the enhancement of the cross section observed around 3 8 and 46 eV incident electron energies in the ejected-electron excitation function of the (2p(5) 3S(2))P-2(1/2) level. An analysis of the Hartree-Fock energies and decay channels for even-parity configurations located between 35 and 50 eV revealed two separate groups of configurations, namely, the 2p(5) (3s3p, 4p, 5p + 3pns + 3pnd) and 2p(5) (4snp + 3dnp + 4pnd + 4dnp), which may contribute to the population of the (2p(5) 3S(2))P-2(1/2) level. Inasmuch as the calculated contribution from the radiative cascades themselves amount to no more than 0.4%, the enhancement observed in the cross section by about 100% points out the presence of strong resonance processes in electron impact excitation of the upper cascading levels.
