PROMOTING the excellence of UK physics research is an objective that no-one would seriously question. So any mechanism that assesses the quality of the physics itself must surely be a good idea. But how effectively, does the UK's Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) judge physics? The RAE takes place every four years or so and it involves panels of experts evaluating the research output of every UK university department (see box). The results of the most recent exercise were announced late last year (Physics World January p5). But the end product of the mountain of documentation that each department had to supply - not to mention the collective time and angst that went into producing it - was just one of seven grades, ranging from 1 (the lowest) to 5*.
